Sebina introduces her blog geekechic.com where she writes about fashion tech in Italy. An ambitious project that you can’t afford to miss !
1. Hello Sebina, can you introduce yourself and your blog geekechic.com ?
Hello Upfluence readers! I am Italian, currently living between Milan and Barcelona and working as a content strategist. I love writing since ever: I built my first magazine online in 2001 using Frontpage and in the last years I started at least 4 different blogs about cooking, fashion, travel and technology, of course. Geek è Chic (in Italian, it means “geek is chic”) is my last project, born so that I could write about niche technology topics from a woman perspective: I think I have been the first writing about fashion tech in Italy. I was a technology web editor and editor in chief for some years and then, after a collective dismissal in my last company, I decided “Why do not trying to blog for a living?”.
2. What are your editorial habits ? (I write my own content, someone writes for me, someone proofreads me, I take my own pictures for the blog, I post a lot of videos ect…)
I take care of Geek è Chic by myself: I select the topics, I write my article, I proofread them, I work on pictures and graphic details (sometimes I take my pictures with my smartphone), I chose style and layout, I installed WordPress and all the needed plugin on a hosting service, I personally answer to readers and partners, and I decide which collaborations and affiliations worth a space on Geek è Chic. I love to tell personal experience and I try not being too much technical: in spite of the name, Geek è Chic is not only for geek. It has a plain language and is made for everyone that believes that technology can be easy and fun.
3. How do you use social networks ? Which one do you prefer ?
I use the social networks to share my content and reach more people. I started with a Facebook Page and then I opened also Google+ and Instagram. I use also my personal profiles on Twitter and Pinterest. I love Instagram, because I love photography, but it requires time and effort. Facebook is more immediate and extremely popular in Italy: the Facebook Geek è Chic community is growing very fast.
4. What are the meaningful moments of the development of the blog ?
I started the blog on WordPress.com in November 2011 writing in the free time, one post for month, or even less. On December 2014 I decided to take it seriously: I migrated to a hosting service, I changed the whole look and feel and I started writing one post per day. In that period Geek è Chic had 50 visits/day or less. Unfortunately during the migration of the content I made some SEO mistakes and I lost ranking and traffic. I worked hard for months and finally in August 2014 the situation changed; my content started ranking in the first Google positions and suddenly I started to have 5.000 visits/day with hype of 10.000 visits/day. It was then that I started with affiliations, display advertising and other collaborations. Today I write less, because I work as a content strategy in a big company, too, but I continue writing and doing a lot of collaborations with very important and known brands.
5. How would you define “geek and chic”?
“Geek and chic” for me is a way of life: it’s making life easier with tech gadgets, apps and software, it’s choosing always the best designed and usable products, it’s mixing fashion and hitech products to appear always elegant, relaxed and happier!
6. Who’s your target ?
When I started my blog I was thinking especially about the young woman (15-45 years) interested in technology, especially keen towards fashion and design, too. But the topic that I cover is appealing for everyone, men included, so we can simply say that I cover technology with a feminine approach and that everyone interested can follow.
7. Which are the most popular categories of your blog ?
Right now “Moda e bellezza” (Fashion and beauty) and “Casa e organizzazione” (Home and organization) are the most successful categories: my audience loves wearables, smart jewelry and the smart home products. But also the category Ricette tecnologiche (Technology recipes) is starting to give me a lot of conversions and I am proud of it because is one of my strong points: in this section you can find step by step tutorials where I explain in a very personal way which products I use (and how) to make my house and my every day life more… geek and chic!
8. Where do you find inspiration ?
As I said, I find inspiration in my every day life. I am really geek&chic: I love fashion, organization and technology and whenever I have a problem I think always how to solve it using a tech product: a smartphone, a gadget, an app, there is always a geek and fast way to make your life easier and more beautiful.
9. A little message for Upfluence ?
Thanks Upfluence for being one of the first in believing in the Geek è Chic project! The collaboration with your professionals has been one of the more satisfying and smoother until now. Keep connecting bloggers and brands!
